By Staff Writer DAYTONA BEACH Sons of the Beach, created in 1984, had their fundraiser at Sunsetters on Main Street this past weekend. A great Sunday event as the hosts Brandon and Gerri Shoaf attended to their guests with the Southern Charm of Florida. Though the weather didn't cooperate, many people came down to support the organization. In fact they added an additional 15 members. Paul Zimmerman said, “It was a very successful event and all proceeds went to the legal fund.” It was a fun afternoon, delicious bites and great conversation as well as entertainment provided by Johnny Odis Sons of the Beach will have their next event after Labor Day. Boogie to Memphis at the Bank and Blues in Daytona was “Fantastic” said one attendee. Our ticket winners Stacie Jenkins Garafano and Kim M. Garafano had broad smiles as they kicked back and enjoyed the show. Blown away was an understatement, as wind blew and a mid summer thunderstorm threatened to bring down the house, the storm did the Floridian roar, but all we heard was the sound of timeless blues. The winner was Souliz. This is their second time heading to Memphis to compete for the title of international Blues artist of the year. They were a reminder of how America is awesome. The name of the band reflects how you feel when you listen to them play. Sugar and Spice a 15 year old guitar phenom “Hurricane”, Tony Fullwood an incredible rythmic Bass player and original member and the rest of the band just simply stole the show. Blues ruled the day but the food being dished out by “ODB” the famous wrestler from TNA Wrestling at her food truck Meat and Greet was second to none. Pork u Nacho's and Pick Yo Meat Rice Bowls, can I have some more please. We Congratulate the artists that performed and look forward to sponsoring the event and supporting Volusia County Blues Society next year. Performing in the Challenge

UPDATE: Feb 3rd, 2018 Following the goings on of this event has certainly been a rollercoaster. It has now been announced the Daytona Truck Meet 2018 is on. A spokesperson has told Behind Daytona that the event has the backing of the county and will be held at the racetrack. 2018 will be bigger then ever with over 100 trucks alone coming in from Canada. Break..... July 21, 2017 Daytona truck meet 2018 not so fast. That's fake news, the Daytona News Journal is at it once again posting the story regarding the success of the 2017 event and that the event will be back next year. Successful Truck Meet Well it turns out as we've been reporting, the event was not so successful and in fact has been met with stiff resistance from the community, both business owners and residents. Reports of urinating off the back of trucks incredibly loud music that vibrated and almost broke windows in cars as they drove past the Ocean Center until 5 6 7 in the morning. At least one business owner on Main Street complained that they didn't get any business at all and had placed advertising for the group, expecting them to show up at the venue. This did not materialize and in fact the trucks hurt the business by stopping traffic from flowing up and down Main Street. In 2016 when this event first took place we took notice about the truckers driving through neighborhoods causing problems this year at the last minute the county put up roadblocks which then caused many problems on A1A and traffic to be backed up 4 miles. With Daytona Beach changing and growing the overarching feeling from the community and business owners is that events like this are a thing of the past and they do not want this kind of behavior in the city as it affects the reputation that they are trying to build as a family friendly Beach Community City. At this time it looks as if County officials are going to bring a halt to the Truck Meet and in fact they no longer have the space they reserved at the Ocean Center the Truck Meet 2018 as of now has been cancelled.
